As you already understand, the fish cage is not an individual simple cage. It is a system with different modules instead.
How could you possibly get the right cages without knowing all these modules?
In this article, we are going to list all the modules that will help you know about the cage system.
This is the most important component for a culture cage system. The nets should be tough and firm so that fishes cannot easily escape. They should be inexpensive and easy to operate. Normally the nets are made of logs, bamboo, metal mesh, synthetic fiber, and other materials.
- The original net cages were made of logs or moso bamboo directly. They were inexpensive and easy to get. They have been used for a long time. The advantages were their thickness. They could prevent enemy species from attacking and fishes from escaping. The disadvantage was its short life cycle. At present, it has been basically eliminated.
- The metal mesh is usually made of wire and rolled by the steel plate. The net is strong and can prevent enemy species from attacking. But it is easy to rust. It can be antitrust by painting or coating. Due to the high cost and complex assembly, this type has been basically eliminated.
- Compared with natural fibers, synthetic fibers have more advantages. They are not subject to natural conditions. Synthetic fibers are characterized by high strength and lightweight. They have the advantage of easy washing, quick drying, and good elasticity.
The frame is designed to fix the cage system. It makes the cage into a certain shape. The materials of the frame are usually bamboo, wood, steel tube, and plastic pipe. The design of the frame is quite diverse based on live stockings and water regions.
3. Buoy devices
The buoy devices are the ones that can make the cage system float in the water and keep a certain shape. Most of them are plastic buckets and floats. The bamboo frames can be also used as buoys.
The sinkers are the ones that make the cage sink. So that the cage is not affected by the wind and waves. It keeps the cage into a certain shape in the water. Generally, the sinker materials are with high density. They are such as sandbags, stones, cement blocks, iron blocks, and lead blocks. The lead blocks are dense and antitrust. But the price is higher. Irons are also dense with lower prices. But they are easy to rust and they will damage the nets.
5. Fixed devices
The fixed devices are to fix the cage in the waters. Usually, people use anchors, ropes, bamboo or cement piles, and other accessories. The fixed net cage is usually fixed with bamboo or cement piles. At one end of the rope, it is attached to the angle. At another end, it is attached to the pile. The rope should be long enough, so the cage will not be immersed in the water when the water level is raised and down. The floating cage is usually fixed with an iron anchor. The size of the anchor is usually determined by the water flow and fish size. The anchor rope usually uses an iron chain, polyethylene rope, and white brown rope.
6. Floating docks
In order to easily feed fishes and manage cultivation, the cage and embankment must be connected by bridges. The bridges consist of foot piles, beams, and springboards. The feet, beams, and springboards are generally made of wood.
Floating wharves use cans or gasoline tanks as floats. Empty boats and anchors can be used as a floating wharf in large aquaculture farms as well. It can be built as a management room, providing rest and storage.
7. The accessory equipment
• Bottom net
The bottom of the cage should be equipped with a net. It can improve the bait utilization, reduce the bait loss and get better feeding.
• Food table
The food table is the place where people feed the fishes. The table is usually in the square. The table can be made of wood. The baits are put into the middle of the table. When the baits sink down vertically, the fish can eat at the bottom. These devices are very important for cage feeding. It can effectively improve bait utilization and reduce feed loss.
8. Other subsidiary facilities
Except for the listings above, we still need some extra facilities in order to implement a successful cage cultivation campaign.
• Small boat
It is used for transportation and feeding. It can be a motor or non-motor boat.
• Washing machine
Because they are put into water for years, the cages are easy to be attached with algae. These might cause poor water quality in the cage. So a high-pressure spray gun is used to wash the net.
• Bait machine
This is useful for the freshwater cultivation, especially when the feeding regions are broad and large. With a bait machine, the baits can be spread evenly, which is very for feeding. It can improve bait performance and reduce feed loss.
• Meat winch machine
With it, people can cut the baits into a smaller slice. It is very helpful to reduce human labor and improve feeding efficiency.
• Freezing equipment
When people use smaller fishes as feed baits, freezing equipment can be a good tool to cool store these baits.
Sandbags are usually used for emergency situation. When a strong wind comes, people drop sandbags into the cages, so that these sandbags can prevent the cages from being blown away.
• Phyllostachys pubescens
They are mainly used to reinforce the cages. In summer, the cages should be placed with some extra bamboos. They can help the cages resist the storm better.
• Spare meshes
They can be used for repairing and replacing when the cage is damaged.
• Oxygen increasing facilities
When the water flow is seasonal, people can deploy some oxygen facilities in order to increase oxygen in the water.
